Hunting the Hippopotamus

Compiled from Safari Hunts platform data and professional-hunter practice · Updated July 2026

Africa's most dangerous large animal kills more people than any of the celebrated Big Five, and hunting an old bull on land — cut off from water on his night grazing route — is dangerous-game hunting at its rawest. Water hunts test precision instead: a brain shot on a surfacing bull at 60–100 m with nothing visible but eyes and ears. The enormous skull with its polished ivory tusks makes a museum-grade trophy.

Judging a trophy hippopotamus

Bulls are judged by body bulk, scarring from territorial fights, and tusk wear visible in the yawn. Your PH separates bulls from cows in the pod — get that wrong and the paperwork gets worse than the danger.

Method, rifle and season

Land ambush at night-grazing crossings or precision water shots; .375 minimum with solids for the brain. Dry season shrinks pools and concentrates pods.

Regulations: CITES Appendix II; export permits required. Checked July 2026.
