Mozambique is the wild east: coutada blocks between the Zambezi delta and the coast where buffalo herds number in the hundreds, sable are a staple rather than a prize, and nyala slip along palm-lined drainage in the dawn mist. Rebuilt from the ground up since the 1990s by hunting-funded conservation, the swamps-and-savanna mosaic offers a rawer safari than the ranch countries — tented camps, tides of game, and genuinely unfenced hunting.
April–November; July–October is prime as floodplains dry and buffalo concentrate. Coastal humidity is real — light gear, serious boots.
Fly into Beira or Maputo, then charter into the blocks — road access is expedition-grade. Rifle temporary-import permits are arranged by operators in advance. Portuguese is the official language; camps run bilingual. Malaria prophylaxis is non-negotiable.
