An elephant hunt is the last of the great walking safaris: days on spoor in heat and jesse, reading dung and track freshness, approaching inside thirty metres of the largest land animal on earth to judge ivory — and walking away from ninety-nine bulls to find the old one. It is hunting at its most demanding and most regulated, offered on strict national quota in a handful of range states, and it funds anti-poaching and community programmes at a scale photographic tourism rarely matches in the same blocks.
Ivory weight and age: sixty-pound tusks are exceptional in most modern blocks; your PH judges lip-line thickness, taper and stain up close. One-tusked and broken bulls are honest old trophies.
Pure tracking with a DG-qualified PH; .375 legal floor, .416–.470 the working standard, solids only for the frontal brain or heart. Dry season concentrates bulls on water.
