Hunting in Tanzania

Compiled from Safari Hunts platform data and operator practice · Updated July 2026

Tanzania is the grand safari in its original form: 21-day licences, miombo woodland to the horizon, and the classic East African bag — buffalo in the Selous-successor reserves, lion and leopard on quota, and the great lesser kudu/gerenuk specialities of the Maasai steppe. It is the most expensive mainstream destination in Africa and unapologetic about it; what it sells is scale, tradition and trophy quality that still sets records.

Season

July–December season; July–October is prime across the big southern and western blocks before the short rains.

Getting there & logistics

Fly into Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro; blocks are charter-access with government game scouts assigned to every safari. Licence classes (16- and 21-day) define what may be taken — plan the wish-list around the licence, not after it. Rifle import permits are operator-arranged.
