Hunting the Cape Buffalo
Compiled from Safari Hunts platform data and professional-hunter practice · Updated July 2026
Cape buffalo are the classic entry into dangerous game and the reason the phrase 'black death' exists in hunting literature. A buffalo hunt is a tracking hunt: cutting spoor at dawn, following a bachelor herd for hours through jesse or mopane, and getting inside 60 metres of an animal that weighs three-quarters of a ton and holds a grudge. It is the most physically honest hunt in Africa — and the one hunters repeat.
Judging a trophy cape buffalo
A shootable bull is defined by the boss — the helmet of horn across the skull. Hard, fully-fused bosses with worn, polished tips mean a mature bull (10+ years); width matters less than age. The 40-inch spread is a talking number, but professional hunters will tell you: hunt the oldest bull in the herd, not the widest.
Method, rifle and season
Tracking on foot behind a licensed dangerous-game PH, with a legal-minimum .375 H&H and premium solids/bonded softs — most PHs prefer .404 Jethro or .416 upward. Dry season (June–October) firms the tracking ground and shortens the grass. Expect several kilometres on foot per day.
Regulations: Buffalo are not CITES-listed, but all dangerous-game hunts require a DG-qualified professional hunter and, on Safari Hunts listings, verified medevac arrangements. Checked July 2026.

Frequently asked
Is a Cape buffalo hunt safe?
It is a managed-risk hunt: a licensed dangerous-game PH controls every approach, backup rifles are standard, and Safari Hunts listings flag medevac cover. Respect the protocol and the risk is professional, not reckless.
What is the minimum calibre for buffalo?
The legal minimum across southern Africa is .375 H&H Magnum. Most professional hunters recommend .404, .416 or .458-class rifles with premium 400-grain-plus bullets.
How long should I book for a buffalo hunt?
Seven hunting days is the sensible minimum. Buffalo are tracked, not ambushed — weather, wind and herd movement all spend days.
