Hunting the Cape Bushbuck

Ounce for ounce the gamest animal in the spiral-horn family: a bushbuck ram is a solitary, sharp-horned thicket dweller with a bark like a gunshot and a documented willingness to charge when wounded. Rams are hunted along river lines at the edges of the day — a slow, close, nerve-testing form of hunting closer to roe stalking than open African glassing, and the neat, heavy-based spirals are treasured beyond their inches.

Judging a trophy cape bushbuck

A mature Cape ram runs 13–15 inches of tight spiral with dark, heavy bases; the ragged-eared, dark-coated look of age is the real signal.

Method, rifle and season

Dawn/dusk still-hunting on riverine paths; short-range, quick shooting with a light-handling rifle. Winter strips the cover.

Frequently asked

Are bushbuck genuinely dangerous?

For their size, yes — wounded rams have put PHs in hospital. Follow up with respect and let the dog and PH work.
