The red hartebeest looks assembled by committee — long mournful face, high shoulders, heart-shaped horns on a skull pedestal — and then it runs, and nothing on the veld keeps up. Herds in open grassland country post sentries that pick up movement at extraordinary range, making the hartebeest a genuine test of open-ground stalking and one of the most underrated trophies on a plains-game list.
Both sexes carry horns; a mature bull shows heavy, rugose bases meeting in that distinctive pedestal, with deep hooks — around 23 inches is a fine trophy.
Long-glass spot-and-stalk using folds in open country; flat-shooting rifles and 200–300 m confidence required. Dry winter months concentrate herds.
