Hunting the Blesbok

The blesbok is highveld hunting distilled: open grassland, a white-blazed face watching you from 400 metres, and no cover but the curve of the earth. Endemic to South Africa and brought back from near-extinction by private landowners, blesbok are usually the first lesson a hunter gets in shooting prone across real distance — and the common and white colour phases make an attractive pair.

Judging a trophy blesbok

Rams and ewes both carry ringed, lyre-ish horns; a mature ram runs 15–17 inches with heavy, close-ringed bases and a thickened neck in the rut.

Method, rifle and season

Prone spot-and-stalk in open grass; 6.5mm–.308-class accuracy tools shine. Year-round on the highveld; autumn rut (March–April) adds movement.
