The poor man's buffalo, hunters call him — and mean it as a compliment. A blue wildebeest bull carries buffalo attitude in a 250-kilogram frame: notoriously tough, herd-wary, and capable of soaking up a marginal hit and covering country. Wildebeest teach the most important lesson in African shooting — the shoulder, not behind it — and a hard-bossed old bull in worn grey hide is a genuinely underrated trophy.
Judge the boss and the spread together: mature bulls show fused, polished bosses and horns that swing wide, down and up with heavy points. Around 28–30 inches of spread with solid bosses is a fine bull.
Walk-and-stalk into feeding herds, shots 100–250 m; bring .30-06 up with stout 180-grain-plus bullets — wildebeest punish light-for-calibre choices. Dry-season herding (May–September) makes bulls easier to pick.
