South Africa's national animal is a small target with a big reputation: springbok live in open Karoo and Kalahari country where there is nothing to hide behind, and they know it. The hunt is prone-off-a-bipod marksmanship — reading wind over 200-plus metres of shimmer, timing the shot between heads-up moments. Colour-variant springbok (black, white, copper) make the species a collector's project, and springbok venison and biltong are prized across the country.
A mature ram goes 13–15 inches with deep hooks and heavy bases; look for the horn tips curling in and down. The body is small — a calm rangefinder matters more than a big calibre.
Open-country spot-and-stalk or careful use of shallow drainage lines; .243 to 6.5mm-class rifles with match-grade bullets excel. Hunted year-round; crisp winter mornings (June–August) give the stillest air.
