Everyone books a kudu; everyone comes home talking about the warthog. Boars with real ivory are old, canny animals that water at midday and back into their burrows at a jog with tails up like aerials. A waterhole blind in winter is the classic setup, and the trophy — sweeping upper tusks on a europeanised skull — is pure Africa on a bookshelf.
Ivory length is the measure: 10 inches of visible tusk is good, 12-plus exceptional. Look for wide, symmetric sweeps and the heavy warts of a mature boar; sows carry thinner, straighter tusks.
Blind-hunting over water in the dry season is deadly effective; walk-and-stalk works in the mornings. Any accurate .243-up rifle does the job. May–September midday heat is prime.
